Obamas Welcome “First Dog”
The Obama family have settled on a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog to be the “First Dog.” The dog, named Bo for Bo Diddley, is a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy. Kennedy, who has
three Porties himself, acquired Bo for the Obamas from a
breeder when he was returned after living with another family.
As for their pledge to look for a rescue dog, according to
The Washington Post the Obamas say they’re going to make
a donation to the D.C. Humane Society.
Since we are a publication devoted to promoting adoption and rescue we had very high hopes that the presidential dog would come from a rescue, breed rescue or shelter. Even our
current cover was in great anticipation of the rescue dog that
would soon call the White House – home.
We encourage families who are interested in a particular breed of animal or have special circumstances such as allergies in their home to turn to their local animal shelter or breed rescue group. According to The Humane Society of the United States 25% of all dogs in shelters are purebreds. Many wind up there for simple reasons and are waiting for the right home.
