EDITOR’S NOTE – WINTER 2011

Winter is upon us and most of us are thinking about holiday activities, breaking out the heavier coats and turning up the heaters in our homes to keep warm.

The winter issue of Dog’s Life is in part about celebrating what we love about being a dog guardian. The Good Dog column introduces a new and fun sport called Treibball to share with your dog. The Fetch column gives some helpful tips for keeping your dog safe from holiday hazards in your home. Yap features three unconventional but inspirational stories; a blind runner, a blind dog and an elephant. Each story proves the power of canine companionship. We feature some wonderful dog products on page 5 in our Holiday Gift Guide for the dogs (and dog lovers) in your life.

The winter issue is also about emphasizing the idea of giving and the ways that we can give to the nonprofits that need so much help. Our cover story, “Good Newz for Dogs,” is the ultimate example of inspiration coming from tragedy. Tamira Thayne and her nonprofit, Dogs Deserve Better, have taken on a great challenge to help formerly chained dogs. DDB purchased the Bad Newz Kennels, known to most as the former home and dog-fighting ring of football player, and convicted felon, Michael Vick. The house once used to torture dogs has become a safe haven and respite for formerly chained dogs.

Please check out our shelter wish list on page 20. We list items that would really make a difference for any shelter or rescue to help them keep doing the good work of finding forever homes for dogs. I wish all of you a safe and happy holidays!
