EDITOR’S NOTE – SUMMER 2011
Summer marks the time of year when the weather is warmest and the days are longest. For those reasons, many of us make plans for more outdoor activities and family vacations. That is why the summer issue of Dog’s Life is always dedicated to travel and fitness and this one is full of interesting articles on these topics.
People like to take advantage of the warmer temperatures for outdoor exercise and we want to encourage you to include your four-legged and furry friend. The Good Dog column features some outdoor exercises you can do with your dog along with safe summer exercise information. If you plan to drive on a local trip or just to the dog park, the Fetch column has tips on how to keep your dog safe when he joins you on car rides. We feature some wonderful dog-friendly products for some summer fun on page 9.
In our cover story, “Travel Rewards,” we discuss the growing trend of voluntourism. Just as the name suggests, it combines being a tourist on vacation with the added purpose of volunteering for a local community organization. Voluntouring has become a popular activity for people of all ages. If you are an altruistic dog-lover, who also likes to travel, then you will find the experience incredibly rewarding. There are many locations in the U.S. and Worldwide where you can make a positive impact for animals through your travels.
I hope you enjoy all this summer issue. Whether you are reading it on the beach, on a plane to out-of town or even if you are doing a “staycation” at home this summer, please keep in mind that wherever you are in the world we can all make a difference in a dog’s life.
