EDITOR’S NOTE – SPRING 2011
Springtime is around the corner while I’m writing this note. Although some parts of the country may not see it because of their long and brutal winter, it is on it’s way to celebrate the ideas of rebirth, renewal and regrowth. In addition to those ideas we can add the three R’s of the environment: reduce, reuse and recycle.
You may be wondering what this has to do with dogs. We are dedicating this issue of Dog’s Life to Earth Day on April 22. In celebration of this, we have articles dedicated to how your dog can make a difference for this planet if you are conscious about the choices you make for his lifestyle. Green grooming has become more mainstream and we discuss this trend in detail on page 5. Earth-friendly dog toys and products are more readily available and we feature some of the best on page 9. To really make an impact we give you the 10 ways to “green” your dog on page 14.
In our cover story, “Rescued Dogs Rescuing People,” we profile the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, a nonprofit, non-governmental organization based in Ojai, Calif. Their mission is to produce the most highly trained and certified canine disaster search teams in the nation. They take dogs from the shelters and rescues and train them to search for live victims of natural disasters or terrorist attacks. These dogs literally go from homeless to heroes.
We hope you enjoy reading our special “eco” issue and recycle it by sharing it with other dog lovers in your life. At Dog’s Life, we truly believe that the best form of recycling is to buy used — adopt a dog!
