Editor’s Note – Spring 2010

Spring is here and it is a time for the planet to replenish itself after a hard winter. During this season is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22. People are now more conscious of the impact they make on this planet. To do our part in celebration of this day we feature some amazing eco-friendly products on the Dog Treats page to help reduce your dogs’ carbon “pawprint.” Of course, you can practice the ultimate form of recycling by adopting a dog!

The supply of dogs needing homes has always been more than the demand but right now California is experiencing an abundance of a certain breed — the Chihuahua. In our cover story, “Small Dogs, Big Crisis,” we discuss the efforts of many groups to deal with the Chihuahua crisis. The shelters are overwhelmed with the tiny breed and working together with private businesses on innovative solutions to deal with this big problem.

I can’t forget to mention the animals in Haiti following the devastating earthquake. Humane Society International and many other groups are doing what they can to relieve animal suffering so please donate to them to help with the relief.

Lastly, I wanted to share the exciting news that for a third year in a row Dog’s Life has been recognized by the Genesis Awards for our editorial work. Two stories by our feature writer Kyra Kirkwood, “Adoption is the New Black” and “Prison Pups,” won honorable mentions. You can find them on our website if you missed them last year. Have a great spring!
