EDITOR’S NOTE – FALL 2010

WELCOME TO OUR THIRD ANNIVERSARY ISSUE! Three years ago, I published the first issue of Dog’s Life based on my passion for rescue dogs and their welfare. Many people asked me how I would be able to regularly come up with interesting content related to animal welfare and good dog guardianship. The answer was simple — the need for progress when it comes to our pets is endless.

August 29 marks a different anniversary. It has been five years since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and changed the lives of the people and animals of that region. I have briefly mentioned before that New Orleans is my hometown and the disaster had a particularly significant meaning to me since my friends and family were directly impacted.

Countless media outlets will cover this milestone in different ways. While there are many types of stories to be told, our cover story, “Hurricane Katrina: 5 Years after the Storm” will focus on the most important animal welfare lessons learned from this event. New governmental policy, public awareness and responsibility grew from this catastrophe to help better prepare not only New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, but also the entire nation, for any future disasters.

In the past, we’ve dedicated parts of the fall issue to senior dogs in honor of Adopt a Senior Pet Month in November. We continue this tradition with our Wellness column discussing a senior dog affliction called canine cognitive dysfunction or doggie dementia. We also feature some amazing dog products on the Dog Treats page that can give your mature canine some physical comfort in everyday life during their golden years.

Finally, as Dog’s Life begins its fourth year in publication I want to thank all of our advertisers, subscribers, contributors, and readers for their support. You all have proven that a little dog magazine with a mission can make a big difference in a dog’s life.
