ARTIST WHO DESIGNED OBAMA “HOPE” IMAGE IS NOW HELPING SHELTER PETS
Our nation’s shelters and rescues are filled to capacity with all kinds of amazing adoptable animals who need a home of their own. So in the spirit of hope and progress, Adopt-a-Pet.com (formerly 1-800-Save-A-Pet.com) has launched the ADOPT campaign to raise awareness about the importance of adopting pets and to provide the animals of our country with hope and positive change too.
Adopt-a-Pet.com is a nonprofit pet adoption website that helps shelters, humane societies, SPCAs, pet rescue groups, and pet adoption agencies advertise their homeless pets to adopters for free. Over 1,500,000 unique visitors a month search Adopt-a-Pet.com by zip code and other preferences to see photos and descriptions of pets for adoption in their area.
The ADOPT campaign features a new iconic image created by Los Angeles-based, contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey and modeled on Fairey’s iconic Obama “HOPE” poster. Fairey, who Time magazine named “Icon Maker” of the year, has gotten behind the plight of our four-legged U.S. residents in an effort to save the lives of animals currently awaiting adoption in shelters across the country. “As most of you know, I’m a big believer in speaking up for all who suffer injustice, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or in this case, species!” said Fairey. “The image I created for this print reminds me of a dog I had as kid, a mutt named Honey.”
Clay Myers, a professional animal welfare photographer, took the image used to inspire Fairey. Myers works tirelessly to capture the images that expose the horrors of illegal breeding and that celebrate the loyal cats, dogs and other pets who await adoption at shelters nationwide.
Fairey has created a limited edition run of 400 signed and numbered silk-screen prints available through Adopt-a-Pet.com. Proceeds will go towards helping the millions of animals in shelters get adopted.
You can show your support and help get the word out. The ADOPT dog poster is available for download and distribution at www.muttslikeme.com a new website that encourages people to wear and share the image to promote adoption. The site includes printable PDFs, a coloring page for kids, banner ads, links on Facebook and other pages, purchasing stickers, T-shirts and more.
Adopt-a-pet.com is currently organizing an art show in Los Angeles to help shelter animals. The show will include Shepard’s work and both established and newly discovered artists who are turning their talents towards the plight of shelter animals.
